video phone beyonce mp3 Dogfish: Bowfin Encounters

We encountered several Bowfin (Amia calva; also known as dogfish, mudfish, choupique) at one of our wetland restoration sites over the 2014 field season. This year we began tagging these fish as they entered the wetland and monitoring their movements, spawning/nest locations, and young-of-the-year (YOY) fish produced. This video highlights several encounters with this unique "living fossil" fish!

These Bowfin migrated upstream through agricultural ditches* from nearshore bay of Green Bay to spawn. Not all Bowfin populations/individuals are migratory, but fish in this area are. We follow this individual for a few moments; note the use of both undulatory movement of the dorsal fin, as well as caudal for burst speed.
Female Bowfin can be differentiated from males by the lack of a bright eye spot (ocellus) toward the upper caudal peduncle (base of caudal fin). In males, the ocellus has a bright yellow ring; in females it is just a dark spot or lacking completely. Males in spawning mode also have bright green bellies and pectoral, pelvic, anal fins.
Male bowfin build the nest and guard eggs and young. Note the defensive posturing of the male in the clip where he's guarding the nest! In the final clip we can see the small eggs scattered below the guardian male. Very cool primitive fishes!

*this individual looks a little "roughed up" as the upstream journey through culverts and other moderately passable structures can often damage fishes. Our study will also help inform barrier removal efforts that will hopefully improve migratory fishes passage.
